Surgical Labiaplasty

What are the advantages of a labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty may be a good idea for individuals experiencing physical discomfort, chronic health issues, or emotional distress related to the size, shape, or asymmetry of their labia. The benefits are highler personal and can significantly improve a person's quality of life.

Physical and Functional Benefits
  • Relief from Discomfort: Excess labial tissue can cause chronic irritation, chafing, and pain during everyday activities like walking, sitting for long periods, or exercising (e.g., cycling or running).
  • Comfort in Clothing: The procedure allows individuals to wear a wider range of clothing, including tight-fitting gym wear, swimsuits, or certain underwear, without discomfort or self-consciousness about the labia being visible or pinching.
  • Improved Hygiene: Larger labia can sometimes trap sweat, moisture, and bacteria, making it difficult to maintain personal hygiene and leading to a higher risk of recurrent issues like yeast infections or urinary tract infections (UTIs).
  • Enhanced Sexual Comfort: Enlarged labia can get tugged or pulled during sexual intercourse, leading to pain and decreased satisfaction. A labiaplasty can eliminate this discomfort and potentially improve sensation for a more gratifying experience.

Emotional and Psychological Benefits
  • Boosted Self-Confidence: Many women feel self-conscious or embarrassed about the appearance of their labia, which can negatively impact their self-esteem and body image.
  • Reduced Anxiety and Improved Intimacy: By addressing aesthetic concerns and feelings of "abnormality," labiaplasty can reduce anxiety in intimate situations and with partners, leading to healthier relationships and a more positive outlook.
  • Body Acceptance: The procedure can help women feel more comfortable and "normal" in their own bodies, free from the distress caused by comparing themselves to media-driven aesthetic ideals.
Ultimately, the decision to have a labiaplasty is a personal one. A consultation with a qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon can help determine if the procedure is right for you based on your specific physical symptoms and personal goals.

How does a labiaplasty work? Am I a good candidate?

There are several ways that a labiaplasty can be performed. The most important factor that determines the appropriate method is looking at the desired outcome and current anatomy. These are the most common approaches to a labiaplasty.

  • Trim Technique (Edge Resection): This involves removing excess tissue along the outer, often darker, edge of the labia minora. The remaining edges are then sutured together with dissolvable stitches, creating a new, linear edge. This is effective for removing discolored tissue and can be combined with a clitoral hood reduction using a single incision.
  • Wedge Technique (V-shaped Resection): In this method, the surgeon removes a V-shaped or “pie-shaped” piece of tissue from the middle of the labia minora. The remaining edges are then stitched together, which preserves the natural, wrinkled border of the labia, often resulting in a more natural look. This technique requires more surgical skill and may be less effective at removing excess tissue along the entire length of the labia.

In the end, Dr Bertoldo wants you to have an outstanding outcome that makes YOU happy. The consultation and preop discussions help ensure this is the case.

How much does a labiaplasty cost?

The initial consult for a labiaplasty is $300. That fee is applicable to the overall cost of the labiaplasty if you decide to proceed with the procedure.  Overall the average cost of a surgical labiaplasty is $5000. This includes the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia and operating room costs. We have negotiated the best rate in the valley for this procedure and are confident that we can provide an outstanding and compassionate experience. Sometimes, the cost may be higher if additional options or treatment are required. Many patients do not require additional treatment. Additional options to help with skin tightening of the area include Morpheus8 to the perineum and optionally to another area at a discounted rate. We have many patients that elect to do a abdominal treatment for stretch marks or skin laxity at the same time they do a perineal treatment with Morpheus8 and labiaplasty.

What is the recovery time?

Recovery time is typically around 3 weeks until tenderness and irritation from the stitches is completely resolved. We provide a topical cream that numbs and helps the tissue to heal faster. At 6 weeks things should be completely healed with no tenderness and no remaining stitches are left.
