What are neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators are a category of facial cosmetic injections that work to alleviate moderate to severe wrinkles that are caused by the repeated movement of facial muscles. We can target areas in the forehead, crows feet, smile lines and more. BOTOX® is a widely popular option for preventative and cosmetic facial filler. While it is one of the most well known, it’s not the only option out there. DYSPORT® and XEOMIN® are similar and can be used for a variety of different purposes.

By using the right injectables, we can help you:

What is Botox®?

Botox® is a popular cosmetic treatment that is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face. It is a neuromodulator, which means that it works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles. Botox® is injected into the skin using a fine needle, and the effects typically last for 3-6 months.

One of the main benefits of Botox® is that it is a non-surgical treatment, which means that there is no recovery time needed after the procedure. It is also considered to be a safe and effective way to improve the appearance of the face. However, it is important to note that Botox® should only be administered by a licensed healthcare professional to ensure that it is done safely and correctly. In addition, botox may have some side effects such as pain or swelling at the injection site, headache or nausea, and in rare cases, it may cause drooping of the eyelids or eyebrows.

There is a risk that all botulinum toxin products may spread from the area where they were injected to other parts of the body, causing potentially life-threatening swallowing and breathing problems. This was predominantly seen in children treated with Botox® off-label for cerebral palsy. These issues have not been reported among people who received botulinum products for cosmetic uses or to treat blepharospasm.

What is Xeomin®?

Xeomin® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults for a short period of time (temporary).

Better or worse than Botox®?

Xeomin® has no additives, and is made up of botulinum toxin type A. This means that there is often less risk of developing antibodies against Xeomin® compared to other available neuromodulators. The human body naturally develops antibodies in response to foreign substances, so in theory, antibodies could prevent a neuromodulator from having its desired effects. The effects of Xeomin® occur within one week, and the results last from three to six months, making it comparable to Botox in terms of both onset and duration of action. Xeomin® should not be used interchangeably with other botulinum products.

When Xeomin® is used to treat cervical dystonia, side effects include neck pain, muscle weakness, injection site pain and musculoskeletal pain. When used to treat blepharospasm, the most common side effects of Xeomin® were eyelid sagging, dry eye, dry mouth, diarrhea, headache, visual impairment, shortness of breath (dyspnea), and upper respiratory infections.

What is Dysport®?

Dysport® is an injectable filler that is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Similar to Botox, it is injected into the skin using a fine needle, and the effects typically last for 3-6 months. Dysport® works by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles, which results in a smoother and more youthful appearance.

Dysport® is FDA approved for the treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, known as glabellar lines. It is also used off-label for other areas of the face such as crows feet, forehead wrinkles and for the treatment of migraines. Like Botox, Dysport® is considered to be a safe and effective way to improve the appearance of the face, however, it is important to note that it should only be administered by a licensed healthcare professional to ensure that it is done safely and correctly.

Better or worse than Botox®?

One benefit of Dysport® over Botox® is that it has been shown to diffuse more widely within the injection area. This can be beneficial for treating larger areas or for patients who have a wider distribution of wrinkles. Dysport® also tends to have a faster onset of action with some patients noticing results within 24-48 hours compared to the 3-7 days of onset with Botox®. However, it may also depend on the practitioner’s technique and the patient’s individual physiology.
